About Us

Leadership is shaped by how people think, feel and respond at work.

It shows up in everyday moments, conversations, decisions, reactions under pressure, and the conditions leaders create for others to do their best work.

This is where the work of Four Smith Avenue sits.

How we think about leadership

At Four Smith Avenue, we see leadership as people work.

While strategy, structure and systems matter, it is the human experience of leadership that shapes performance over time. How clearly people can think, how safe they feel to contribute, and how they relate to one another all influence outcomes.

Our work starts here, with people, and the conditions influencing how they show up.

Our lens: neuroscience, applied

Our approach is informed by the neuroscience of leadership, not as theory, but as a practical way of understanding behaviour at work.

Neuroscience helps make sense of:

  • how people respond to pressure and uncertainty

  • what supports clear thinking and good decision‑making

  • why psychological safety matters for learning and collaboration

  • how habits, emotions and environment shape performance

By working with how people actually think, feel and behave at work, leaders and teams are better able to create the conditions for better thinking and better outcomes.

Why this matters in practice

Leadership and change are experienced by people day to day, not just through plans or structures, but through how work feels, how conversations unfold, and how decisions are made.

When leadership work aligns with this lived experience, change is more likely to take hold and performance becomes more sustainable over time.

This is the space we work in: practical, human and grounded in real work.

How we work with clients

Four Smith Avenue is intentionally small, senior‑led and bespoke.

We work closely with leaders and organisations to design work that fits their context, their people and the challenges they are navigating. There are no off‑the‑shelf programs, every engagement is shaped through thoughtful conversation, careful design and practical application.

Clients often describe our work as calm, structured and human, offering clarity, challenge and support in equal measure.

Jane Smith - Founder & Principal Consultant

Our experience

Four Smith Avenue was established in 2017 and is led by Jane Smith, who brings nearly two decades of senior executive leadership experience across complex organisations.

Over time, Jane noticed consistent patterns, not only in what worked, but in why it worked. This led to a deep interest in leadership behaviour, psychological safety and the neuroscience underpinning how people perform at work.

Today, this experience informs work with leaders, teams and organisations seeking thoughtful, practical and evidence‑informed support.

Our purpose - Cultivating Futures.

For us, this means supporting leaders and organisations to perform well now, while building the human and organisational capacity to remain healthy, adaptable and future‑ready over time.

Our values

Our work is guided by a set of values that shape how we show up and how we partner with our clients:

  • Vulnerability — creating space for honest reflection and learning

  • Authenticity — working with what’s real, not what looks good on paper

  • Understanding — listening deeply before acting

  • Learning — curiosity as a driver of growth

  • Empowerment — enabling people to take ownership and act

These values are not statements on a page, they are experienced in how we work.
